Why Oral Health is linked to Heart Disease

Be sure to select your Cigna dental plan to cover regular cleaning and scaling to maintain healthy gums and avoid potentially dangerous periodontal disease.

There is now convincing scientific evidence about the link between oral health and overall health and wellness.  Gum disease in particular is at the forefront of this research and findings point strongly to the link between this and increased risk of stroke, diabetes and heart disease.

A study published in 2010 by Scottish Health Survey found that those with the worst oral hygiene increased their risk of developing heart disease by 70 percent, compared to those who brush their teeth twice a day.

DENTAL PLANS CAN LOWER THE HEALTH RISKS OF GUM DISEASE

Disease in the gums is primarily caused by poor dental hygiene resulting in a build-up of plaque around the teeth and gums.  Plaque is the sticky coating around the teeth along the gum line containing bacteria.   If plaque isn’t removed each day by flossing and brushing it will become hard and more difficult to remove.  It is the bacteria in the plaque that produces and releases toxins into the bloodstream causing inflammation and, if left untreated, it will ultimately cause periodontal disease.

2 STAGES OF GUM DISEASE

  1. Gingivitis:   If your gums are not pink and firm, and if they bleed easily when you brush your may have gingivitis.  This first stage of periodontal disease is where your gums become inflamed and swollen and very tender.  They will bleed easily.  Gingivitis is usually not painful and so may go unnoticed.
    Remember:  Healthy Gums Don’t Bleed.

  1. Periodontal disease:   Manifests as a breakdown of the gum tissue surrounding the teeth causing the gums to shrink creating periodontal pockets that can fill with toxins and bacteria.  If left to progress the bacteria may eventually move down into the bone, at which time the tooth may be destroyed and need to be extracted.  This is much more severe and may require extensive treatment.

If you notice your gums are tender when you brush or floss, pay attention and seek advice from your dentist.  You may also notice that your gums bleed easily and have become red and are swollen.  Sometimes this is accompanied by persistent bad breath.  It is advisable to get frequent dental exams and possibly cleaning and scaling.

The best way of preventing gum disease is by attention to daily flossing and brushing followed up by professional cleaning.  Your dentist will be able to design an individual plan for your oral care.  Be sure your Cigna dental health plan covers preventive measures such as these.
