7 Reasons to Use the Best Teeth Whitener

1.      Coffee

If you drink lots of coffee your teeth may become very stained therefore the process of removing the stains and whitening will take longer.  The caffeine and the color of the coffee can penetrate below the surface and cause an ugly yellowish stain.  If this is the case it may take from 2 to 3 weeks to achieve the desired result.  You will definitely need to be motivated to follow through with the treatment.

2.      Tea

Drinking lots of tea – particularly black tea – can stain the plaque on your teeth.  If it isn’t brushed away when you clean your teeth it will discolor them leaving a yellowish color.

3.      Smoking

Over time the nicotine and tar in cigarettes will slowly build up on your teeth and the discoloration can penetrate below the surface causing darkish stains.  If you’ve been a smoker for a long period of time, you’ll notice an ugly yellow color forming on your teeth.

4.      Food

Acidic foods and tannin-rich foods and beverages can have a dulling effect on your teeth and produce dark stains.  Remember a food or beverage doesn’t need to be a dark color to reduce the sparkle in your smile.  Wine, red or white, will cause a stain on your teeth.  Sodas and/or sports drinks may also produce a darkening effect.  Sauces like tomato, soy and curry can also be the culprits.  Have water at the table and swish it around in your mouth so as not to leave any remnants clinging to your teeth.  Rinse again when you have finished your meal.

5.      Sugarless gum

Many dentists recommend you chew sugarless gum because it produces saliva in your mouth and therefore helps to prevent plaque from building up around your teeth and gums.  This must be weighed against the opinion that the ingredients in the gum may have a deleterious effect on your general health.

6.      Lipstick Color

Now here’s a tip!  If you have bright white teeth choose a pink or pink-based color for your lips.  This will enhance your skin tone and make your white teeth appear brighter and whiter.  If, however, you have off-white teeth (and there are many tones in between) choose a yellow-based lipstick to complement your skin tone and make your teeth and skin appear brighter and clearer.  If you’re unsure, just experiment and you’ll be surprised at the result.

7.      Whitening Toothpastes

There are many whitening toothpastes to choose from and as they are all abrasive they will help remove stains by polishing your teeth.  Some have an added mild bleaching agent which will give an extra boost to their teeth-whitening strength.

Overnight quick fix?

It is unlikely that one overnight or one hourly whitening treatment will leave your teeth dazzling white – that’s probably not a likely outcome with any whitening procedure.

It will depend a lot on where you are starting from.

Teeth tend to darken with age but you will notice that the color change varies from person to person.

When used correctly, the teeth-whitening procedures should last up to 12 months.  This is provided you are not a smoker and that you have a wholesome diet without deeply colored or acidic foods and drinks.  Carbonated beverages can also stain your dazzling smile!  So keep smiling your brighter, whiter smile.

How safe is a teeth-whitening procedure?

There have been substantial clinical and laboratory tests that show no adverse effects on teeth or gums.  In fact, over a decade of research has proven bleaching and other whitening methods to be safe as well as effective.  It must be said though that no major health problems have been attributed to teeth-whitening products WHEN USED AS DIRECTED.  Some however have been found to have illegal levels of bleach.

It should also be noted that when these whitening procedures are used correctly, the exposure to hydrogen peroxide is minimal.

There have been instances where some people have reported tooth sensitivity and irritation of the gums when using these procedures.  This has stopped when the procedure has been completed.

Dentists recommend brushing your teeth twice daily for at least three minutes and not just the one minute that most of us employ.  Both manual and electric toothbrushes can work very well in keeping teeth clean and healthy but you must floss before and rinse well after cleaning.
